Getting to Humantay Lake from Cusco

Your alarm will go off in the dark. Laguna Humantay lies roughly three hours by road from Cusco, the last hour on dirt, and every tour builds its day around that drive. This guide follows a group day hour by hour and shows how an early private start shifts the clock. It also explains why going alone is harder than the map suggests.

A day shaped by the road

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft), and the trail to the lake starts higher still, at Soraypampa, roughly 3,900 m (12,800 ft). Between the two runs a paved highway to the town of Mollepata, then a rough track up a valley under Nevado Salkantay. No tour can shorten that geography. The real differences between them come down to the hour the van leaves and how many people share it. Door to door, a group day takes 12–15 hours.

The group day, hour by hour

  1. 3:30–5 am, pickup. The van collects from hotels in the historic center. Guests in an Airbnb or a hotel farther out may be asked to walk to a nearby meeting point. Filling a full van takes 30–45 minutes, so whoever is collected last gets the most sleep;
  2. About 2 hours on paved road to Mollepata. Most people doze. Breakfast is in town, and one Inka Altitude guest felt hurried there because the next group was waiting for the tables;
  3. About 1 hour on a dirt road to Soraypampa. The track climbs through the valley to the trailhead parking. Chullos Travel Peru stops a little lower, at Challacancha, and starts walking from there;
  4. Mid-morning to early afternoon, the hike. Roughly 1.5–2 hours of climbing and an hour or so back down, with 30–60 minutes at the lake in between. The Humantay Lake hike, step by step covers the trail;
  5. Early afternoon, lunch in Mollepata. A buffet back in town, then the long drive home;
  6. 5–6 pm, back in Cusco. Drop-off is usually in the historic center rather than at your door. Inka Altitude ends near the Plaza de Armas.

The three group tours on the road

The shared days differ most in their first hour. Inka Altitude, from ~$34, begins collecting at 3:30–4 am and quotes 12–13.5 hours in total, with about 30 minutes for breakfast. Chullos Travel Peru, from ~$25, picks up between 4 and 5 am (Viator gives 4:30 am) and lists 15 hours, returning around 6 pm. Its guide wears a black-and-orange Chullos polo and contacts you on WhatsApp beforehand, so enter a phone number with the country code when you book. Kantu Peru Tours, from ~$27, leaves around 4 am and is usually back about 5 pm.

On any of them, expect a minibus with your knees close to the seat in front. GetYourGuide's review summary for Inka Altitude mentions cramped vans and air conditioning that sometimes fails, which matters more on the hot afternoon drive back than at dawn.

The early start that skips the queue

exploor's Beat the Crowds tour, from ~$199, turns the timetable around. Pickup is at 3 am from your lodging near the center, and a hostel or an Airbnb works too. Breakfast comes around 5:35 am close to the trail rather than in Mollepata, and the briefing at the trailhead parking starts about 7:40 am, before most vans have arrived. Lunch is about noon at a well-reviewed restaurant in the area, and you are dropped at your hotel about 3:30 pm with the evening still ahead of you. Right after booking, send your address and food preferences through the booking messenger. The price and the 3 am alarm are what hold most people back.

On the trail before the vans

exploor's 3 am pickup puts you at the trailhead around 7:40 am with the entrance and meals paid, and back in Cusco by about 3:30 pm, from ~$199. Cancellation is free until 24 hours before.

Two more pickups to weigh

Willka Travel's small-group day, from ~$45, feeds you twice, with a vegetarian choice at lunch, and the listing treats tips as part of the price. The catch is the label. Pickup falls at 3:30–4 am and up to 19 people can join, as many as on the big shared days, so "small group" is relative.

Cusco Grand Adventure's horseback day, from ~$86, sold on GetYourGuide, collects at 4–4:30 am and returns between 5 and 6 pm with a horse for the climb already paid. Only 20 people have reviewed it so far, and one of them complained of a hot bus whose air conditioning barely worked.

Going without a tour

Reaching the lake on your own is possible. Shared minivans called colectivos run from Cusco to Mollepata, and from there you can find onward rides up the valley to Soraypampa. The trouble is timing. You need to reach the trailhead early enough to walk up and back in daylight, and no vehicle waits to carry you down the valley afterward. Once you add a hired ride for the dirt section, the saving over a ~$25 group seat that includes two meals shrinks to very little. For a single day trip, the tour van is hard to beat.

Car sickness on the winding road

Both stretches of road bend sharply, the dirt section most of all, and after a 4 am start a queasy stomach is common. Sit near the front of the van and watch the road ahead. A light breakfast in Mollepata sits better than a heavy one. If you get travel sick easily, ask your doctor about remedies before the trip; Chullos lists motion sickness among the conditions its day does not suit. Thin air can make nausea worse, and altitude at Humantay Lake explains the symptoms to watch for.

Fitting the day into your trip

You get back tired and late, so keep that evening free and avoid an early flight or a train toward Machu Picchu the next morning. Two or three days in Cusco first help your body adjust, and Humantay fits better after those days than on the morning after you land. If you also plan Rainbow Mountain, leave a rest day between the two, as Humantay Lake or Rainbow Mountain? explains. The best time to visit covers the dry and wet seasons, and what a Humantay Lake tour costs adds up the cash you will need along the road.

Questions about the road

How far is Humantay Lake from Cusco?

About 3 hours each way by road. The first 2 hours run on paved road to Mollepata, then about an hour of dirt road climbs to the trailhead at Soraypampa, at roughly 3,900 m.

What time do Humantay Lake tours pick up?

Group tours collect from historic-center hotels between 3:30 and 5 am, depending on the operator. exploor's early start picks up at 3 am. Gathering a full van can take 30–45 minutes.

What time do you get back to Cusco?

Most group days return between 5 and 6 pm, some 12–15 hours after pickup. exploor's early start is back about 3:30 pm.

Can I visit Humantay Lake without a tour?

Yes, with patience. Colectivos run to Mollepata and rides continue to Soraypampa, but the timing is awkward and no transport waits for your return, so a tour is simpler for a day trip.

Do Humantay Lake tours pick up from an Airbnb?

Group tours pick up in the historic center and may send guests staying in an Airbnb or an outlying hotel to a nearby meeting point. MachuPicchu Journey's private day collects from your hotel or Airbnb, and exploor collects from lodging near the center.
