Private and small-group Humantay tours

On a trail at 4,200 m (13,780 ft), the size of your group decides who sets the pace. Listings for Humantay Lake use the words "private" and "small group" loosely, and one small group runs to 19 people. This guide sorts the tours by who shares your van and your guide, then works out what going private costs for two people and for four.

What the labels mean here

  • Private. Only your party rides in the vehicle and walks with the guide. MachuPicchu Journey's day works this way, as does BioAndean's two-day trip, which takes two to ten people per booking;
  • Small group. A cap on numbers, though the cap varies a lot. exploor's overview says eight at most, while Willka Travel's small group goes up to 19;
  • Group. The standard shared day. Chullos Travel Peru takes up to 15 or 19 depending on the site, Inka Altitude up to 19 and Kantu Peru Tours up to 16.

Often the road and the timetable stay the same in every format. What changes is whether you wait for strangers at breakfast and on the zigzags, and how much attention the guide can give you.

MachuPicchu Journey's private day

MachuPicchu Journey's private excursion, from ~$99, scores 4.9 from 276 Viator reviews. A driver collects you at 4:30 am from your hotel or Airbnb. After breakfast in Mollepata, the walk from Soraypampa takes about 1.5 hours. At the lake the guide demonstrates an offering to the Apus, the mountain spirits, and invites you to take part. Lunch follows back in Mollepata, and you are in Cusco about 5 pm, roughly 12 hours after leaving. The price covers the entrance, 20 soles (about $5–6), as well as both meals.

Its weak point is timing. Because it keeps the same hours as the shared vans, you reach the shore when it is busiest, only with a guide who belongs to you alone. Viator also says the price varies by group size, so treat ~$99 as a starting figure; a couple pays more each than a party of four. The listing asks for moderate fitness and rules out travelers with back or heart problems.

Your own guide and van for the day

MachuPicchu Journey sends a van for your party only at 4:30 am and covers the entrance along with both meals, from ~$99. At the lake you can join an offering to the Apus, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead.

exploor's early start

exploor's Beat the Crowds day, from ~$199, is listed as private, yet the overview mentions a small group of eight at most, so ask when you book whether anyone else will join. It holds 4.9 from 144 reviews, and the whole design is about the clock. Leaving Cusco at 3 am puts the group at the trailhead parking by about 7:40 am, ahead of the shared vans, and back in town by about 3:30 pm. Entrance and drinks are included along with breakfast and lunch.

The price is about eight times a shared seat, and the alarm rings at an hour most people never see. Demand is the other issue. Viator says travelers book it about 139 days ahead on average, the longest lead time of any tour we compare, so plan early if your dates fall in the dry months.

Private options from the group operators

Two of the big group operators also sell private departures on GetYourGuide. Chullos Travel Peru, from ~$25, offers a private option for up to 19 on the same listing, but private departures after 7 am skip breakfast. Inka Altitude, from ~$34, lists a private version for up to 16, and reviewers who chose it liked it. The private price appears once you select that option. Both follow the usual route, so the label mostly buys you your own van and guide rather than a quieter lake.

Kantu Peru Tours keeps its private day on a separate Viator listing. Kantu's private full day, from ~$110, holds a perfect 5.0 from 73 reviews. Its catch is a day of 14–15 hours, as long as the shared version or longer, and a per-person price that only falls if your party grows.

Willka Travel's small-group trip, from ~$45, even folds the tips into the price, alongside two meals. The catch hides in the numbers, since up to 19 people can book, no fewer than on a standard shared day.

Why pay for a private day

  • Your own pace at altitude. Nobody waits for you on the zigzags, and nobody makes you wait. At this height, steady matters more than fast; altitude at Humantay Lake explains why;
  • A different clock. Private departures can leave earlier to beat the crowd or later if you dread a 4 am start, though Chullos drops breakfast after 7 am;
  • A guide with time to talk. Questions about the Apus or the glaciers get a proper answer rather than a shout up the line;
  • Children and older travelers. A family can stop for snacks and breaks without holding up strangers. Check age rules first, because Chullos and Kantu do not take travelers over 70;
  • A slower descent. Loose stones on the way down make some walkers want more time than a group allows; the hike, step by step shows where it gets steep.

Two people or four, priced

For a couple, the gap is wide. On a shared Chullos day they pay twice ~$25 plus 40 soles (about $11–12) in entrance fees. On MachuPicchu Journey's private day the bill starts above twice ~$99, because the per-head rate climbs for a party of two, though the entrance is already in it. exploor works out at twice ~$199 with entrance and drinks covered.

Four friends sharing a private day see the per-head price drop, while horses and tips stay the same per person. Enter your real party size on the listing before comparing, because the figure changes with every extra traveler. What a Humantay Lake tour costs totals the cash extras for every option.

Picking a format

  • You want quiet at the lake. exploor's early start, or a night at Soraypampa on BioAndean's two-day dome trip, from ~$350, which cannot be refunded, so be sure of your dates. Humantay and the Salkantay trek describes that trip;
  • You want your own guide at a fair price. MachuPicchu Journey, ideally split among four;
  • You are on a budget but slow uphill. A shared day with a guide who walks at the back, such as Kantu, plus a horse if needed;
  • You are staying outside the center. The private days collect from your door, while shared vans may ask you to walk to a meeting point; getting there from Cusco has the pickup times.

Booking a guide for your party

Is a private Humantay Lake tour a good idea?

It helps most if you walk slowly at altitude or travel with children. A private day on the usual timetable still reaches the shore at the busy hour, so pick an early start if quiet matters most to you.

How much does a private Humantay Lake tour cost?

MachuPicchu Journey's private day starts at ~$99 per person and exploor's early start at ~$199. Viator says the private price varies by group size, so a couple pays more per head than a group of four.

What is the difference between private and small group?

A private tour carries only your party. A small group caps the numbers, but the cap ranges from eight on exploor's day to 19 on Willka Travel's small-group trip.

Can I book a private tour with Chullos or Inka Altitude?

Yes, both sell a private option on GetYourGuide. Chullos private departures after 7 am do not include breakfast, and Inka Altitude takes up to 16 people on a private booking.

How far ahead should I book exploor's early start?

The average lead time on Viator is roughly four and a half months, against about a month for the group days. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes an early booking low risk.
